If you find that your garden hose is stuck and you can’t get it loose, don’t worry! You can easily remove it by following these “simple” steps:
When it comes to stuck garden hoses, people have 2 options: They can try to remove the stuck hose themselves, or they can call a professional who specialty is to remove stuck garden hoses. Keep reading to find out which route I took…
Here is a little background on the last time I ran into this problem and what I did to fix it
Personally, I tried to loosen the hose myself and ended up going to extreme measures. But I know that some people prefer to call a professional. My garden hose is stuck because it has not been removed from the spigot for over 2 spring and summer seasons. and the threads got rusted with a lot of corrosion, see pic below.
This is common because when the water stays on for a long period of time, it will rust the metal parts and make them difficult to remove. It’s recommended that you turn off the water every time you’re finished using the hose, and remove it from the valve so this doesn’t happen. I do have excuses for why I ended up in this position in the first place.
Check out my video on the issue…
How did I get into this situation you ask?
I left the hose attached to the valve and kept on telling myself that I’d eventually remove it the next time I went out and every time I just used it and still kept it on, then winter came. Found out my wife was pregnant with our 3rd child, so the garden hose task just fell off my list until June came around and I had to wash the car and get it cleaned for the new baby.
I realized the hose was stuck then but I didn’t have the time to fix the issue, I just had bigger fishes to fry. Baby came, first year was rough so 2022 was a wash. Then spring 2022 came I finally had no choice but to confront the issue the same day I ran into it again. I got pictures to show for it..
It’s recommended that you turn off the water and remove the hose every time you’re finished using it, so this doesn’t happen.
if you can’t seem to loosen the stubborn hose It may be necessary to go to extreme measures and use a hacksaw to cut through the hose fitting. Make sure to wrap a piece of cloth around the hacksaw to avoid any cuts or injuries. Once the hose is cut, you should be able to easily remove it from the valve. Please proceed with caution…
Here is a short list of tools you will need to take on this problem:
- a pair of rubber or leather gloves
- locking pliers
- a hack saw
- a flathead screwdriver
- lubricant spray
- oh, and a new hose and possibly a new water valve fitting if the corrosion is just too much.
So if you find that your garden hose is stuck and you can’t get it to unscrew, don’t worry! You can easily remove it and here are the steps involved :
1. Turn off the water to the hose. This will help prevent any further damage to the hose and the threads.
2. Use a pair of locking pliers to grip the end of the hose that’s closest to the faucet. If you can’t get a good grip, try wrapping a rag or a piece of cloth around the end of the pliers.
3. Use the pliers to unscrew the hose counterclockwise until it comes loose from the valve.
4. If the pliers don’t work, you can try using a pipe wrench to get the hose to loosen. Again, if you can’t get a good grip, try wrapping a rag or a piece of cloth around the wrench.
5. If the hose still doesn’t budge, try to spray it again with WD40. Let the lubricant sit for a while, and then try to twist the hose again. You may find that it’s now easier to loosen the hose.
6. If the hose still doesn’t budge after trying all of these methods, it may be necessary to go into extreme measures and use a hacksaw to cut the hose. You have to be very careful not to cut through the actual hose connection or injure yourself. Make sure to gently work it and wrap a piece of cloth around the hacksaw to avoid any cuts or injuries. Once the hose fitting is cut, loosen the hose or use a flathead screwdriver to remove it from the valve.
By following these steps, you should be able to remove a stuck garden hose from a valve. Be sure to turn off the water to the hose before attempting to remove it, and always use caution when using tools like pliers, wrenches, hacksaws, etc. With a little patience and elbow grease, you should be able to get that stuck garden hose to loosen in no time!
Now that you’ve hopefully fixed the stuck garden hose problem, let’s talk about prevention
Don’t forget to spray the Threads on the spigot with more lubricant once you remove the tight hose. To prevent this from happening again, be sure to unscrew the garden hose after every use and use a hose reel for more flexibility when you need it next time.
